Unit 1.1: Energy Stores & Systems

⚡ 10-Second Summary

  • Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred.
  • Closed System: The total energy always remains constant.
  • The Basics: Master the 8 Energy Stores and 4 Transfer Pathways to secure full marks.

1. Core Fundamentals

The foundation of thermodynamics you must know before moving on.

A System

8 Energy Stores

4 Pathways

⬜ A System: Open vs Closed

An object or a group of objects you are focusing on.

Closed System: A system where neither matter nor energy can enter or leave. The net change in total energy is always zero.

⬜ The 8 Energy Stores (KG CEMENT)

Kinetic Gravitational Chemical Elastic Magnetic Electrostatic Nuclear Thermal

Use the mnemonic KG CEMENT to memorize all 8 stores.

⬜ The 4 Transfer Pathways

Energy is useless unless it can be transferred. The 4 pathways are:

  • Mechanically: By a force doing work.
  • Electrically: By moving charges doing work.
  • Heating: Due to temperature differences.
  • Radiation: By light or sound waves.

Scenario A

⬜ Object projected upwards

When an object is thrown upwards, it loses speed as it works against gravity.

Energy is transferred from the Kinetic store of the object, mechanically, to the Gravitational Potential store of the object.

"As the ball moves upwards, its kinetic store decreases and its gravitational potential store increases."
Scenario B

⬜ Braking a vehicle

When a vehicle brakes, the friction between the brake pads and the wheels does work to slow it down.

"Energy is transferred mechanically from the kinetic store of the vehicle to the thermal store of the brakes."
Scenario C

⬜ Boiling water in a kettle

An electric current flows through the heating element, transferring energy to it.

"Energy is transferred electrically to the thermal store of the kettle's heating element, and then by heating to the thermal store of the water."

AQA GCSE Physics • 3 Marks
A student throws a ball vertically upwards.
Describe the changes to the energy stores of the ball from the moment it leaves the student's hand until it reaches its maximum height. (3 marks)
  • (1 mark) The kinetic store of the ball decreases.
  • (1 mark) Energy is transferred mechanically.
  • (1 mark) The gravitational potential store of the ball increases.
